We've begun making our plans for this year's Russian River Barrel Tasting Weekend, the first two weekends in March, which if you're out in the Bay Area you should really be doing as well. When we were first out here 5 years ago the cost was $5 for a glass and all the wine you could drink. The price has gone up to $20/glass, but it's still worth it. The region is chalk full of wonderful wineries and tons of great wine, especially if you're a fan of Zinfandels, Pinots, or Syrah. I'm sure there's plenty of great whites as well, but it's hard to get as excited about that.

Thinking about all of this reminded me of this photo from last year's barrel tasting weekend. I found this birdhouse along the driveway to Martin Vineyards' winery, and there was something about it that just struck me. First of course is the original pink it must have been painted some 10 years ago. Given that the rest of the winery was either barn red or white, it just really jumped out. After all, how often do you see pink birdhouses? The other striking feature is that this birdhouse looks as if it has always been on that tree, and that somehow the two are becoming one. Seriously, even it doesn't see the need for that nail over on the left anymore. I wonder if we go back to Martin this year, if this guy will have gotten a fresh coat of paint...I hope not.
