| I imagine most people can't read the text here, so I'll summarize it briefly, "We're sorry to say we're closed, thanks for all the good times." That's the message that appeared very abruptly in the window of the last Cody's books, now on Shattuck Ave in Berkeley. I can say with much certainty, that while most of us kind of saw it coming, no one expected it quite so soon, in fact I'd only been in the store two days earlier and everything was business as normal. For those not familiar with Cody's, the bookstore has been a Berkeley establishment since 1956. In 2005 they tried to open a flagship store in S.F., but it was closed in 2007. This financial disaster precipitated the closing of its Telegraph store shortly thereafter. Their final store on 4th street moved to Shattuck earlier this year due to high rent, and with it's "Now Open!" banner still on the building, Cody's is now closed for good. |
